Holiday DUI's are, apparently, the new black. Actor, playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Sam Shepard was arrested last weekend for drunk driving and speeding.
Sam, whose blood alcohol level was two times the legal limit, told police in Illinois that he'd stopped off at a tavern and was on his way to his home in Kentucky when he was pulled over.
Sam is one of a handful of celebrities who were popped for speeding and/or drunk driving during the holidays. Former professional basketball player Charles Barkley told police he was "gonna drive around the corner and get a b--- j--" after running a stop sign in Scottsdale, Arizona on New Year's Eve; Doug Wilson, of Trading Spaces fame, was arrested in Decatur, Illinois a day earlier. Doug was apparently arrested for DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and driving on a suspended license, and was released on a $1,000 bond.
Matt Dillon was arrested in Newbury, Vermont, on the same day Doug was, but for speeding instead. He was busted going 106 miles an hour in a 65 zone, and rumour has it he was handcuffed at the scene.
There's little doubt in my mind that these celebrities will each get slaps on the wrist and that headlines like these will continue to get more time in the spotlight than the ones that really worthy of our attention.
Oh, the life of the rich and famous.
