During an impromptu interview with Extra's Jerry Penacoli, Joaquin Phoenix announced that he is retiring from acting in order to focus on music.

Extra's cameras caught up with Joaquin at a benefit for Paul Newman earlier this week, where he shared his desire to quit Hollywood.
"I want to take this opportunity… also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor… I’m not doing films anymore," he said.
Jerry, who seemed genuinely surprised by Joaquin's decision, asked him if he was serious, to which Joaquin replied, "Yeah. I’m working on my music. I’m done. I’ve been through that."
Casey Affleck, who happened to be there at the time, said, "I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff." The announcement seemed to come as a surprise to Joaquin's rep, too. When asked about it, he said, "That is what he told me."
Joaquin's alluded to an interest in music before - remember back in May we told you about the album he was working on, an album we'd probably never hear?
Joaquin is far, far too easy on the eyes to NOT be on screen - here's hoping that he can strike a balance between his musical inclinations and making movies - he's one star I definitely want to see on the silver screen.
If he is serious (oh please Joaquin, don't be serious...), his last film will be the upcoming Two Lovers, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

I'm going to pretend I didn't read this. I really hope it's just a phase.
