After seven and a half years of marriage (which, by Hollywood's standards, translates to about sixty-five years), Madonna and Guy Ritchie are calling it quits.
Rumours of marital unrest between the two have circling for up to a year and each time, they've been vehemently denied.
Until yesterday.
"Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after seven-and-a-half years of marriage. They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time," a statement issued by Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, said.
The statement went on to say that the couple's main concern is the security and well being of their children. Lourdes, Madonna's daughter with trainer Carlos Leon, is 12; Madonna and Guy have sons Rocco, 8 and David, 3.
The couple, who own properties in London, New York and Beverly Hills, have a combined net worth that's said to be in and around the $535 million mark. The majority of those millions are Madonna's.
London-based lawyer David Allison told the Associated Press that the court would try and "assess what they came in with and divide what they built up fairly equally," as there was reportedly no pre-nup between the two.
Madonna has apparently hired Fiona Shackleton, a powerful British divorce lawyer who has gone to bat for Prince Charles and Paul McCartney in the past. Rumour also has it that Guy has hired same lawyer who represented Princess Diana when she and the Prince of Wales split, but at this point, that's just hot air (though I wouldn't be surprised if it were true).
But wait - it gets juicier. Suddenly back in the picture is Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, which begs the question: Is Madonna really single? It was widely rumoured this summer that Alex and Madonna were dating; naturally, talk of a sex tape followed immediately. The Material Girl was, apparently, the straw that broke Alex's (now ex) wife Cynthia's back, and was named in their divorce filings under the "long periods of infidelity" section.

Madonna and A-Rod have been seen together as recently as last week; the pair were spotted sharing an intimate meal at New York's Dos Caminos. In Real People World, when two people of the opposite sex eat dinner together it doesn't amount to much other than they were hungry and didn't feel like cooking, but in CelebLand, it means they're in the midst of a torrid affair and she's three months pregnant with their lovechild.
KIDDING! (I think.)
Adding fuel to this scandalous fire is Us Weekly, who has apparently found an inside source with all the hot Madonna/A-Rod gossip.
"Guy is not involved in this equation," their source says. "With or without A-Rod, Madonna and Guy haven't been 'together' for over a year - they have been privately separated. Madonna, however, wanted to finish her world tour before divorcing."
Their source claims that the couple are "more involved than ever," and that although A-Rod missed spending time with Madonna, "he understands the position Madonna's in."
Us Weekly has also reported that Madonna has agreed to be discreet about her relationship with A-Rod until her tour ends and a divorce is announced.
The latter has already happened and since patience is a virtue I don't possess, I'm going to be seriously pissed if I have to wait until the end of Madonna's Sticky & Sweet tour to find out if these two are doing the nasty.
