After Britney Spears' disastrous (and now infamous) performance at MTV's Video Music Awards (VMAs) last year, I was surprised - not to mention a bit wary - when I heard that another comeback was in the works for this year's show.
Alas, the comeback has come to naught: "Britney Spears will not be performing at the VMAs this year. I'm telling you officially and unequivocally," said Ryan Seacrest on his radio show yesterday morning, reading a direct quote from Britney's manager, Larry Rudolph.
Larry told Ryan that Britney wasn't supposed to don the stage in the first place, despite the buzz about the supposed performance. Larry said she's in the process of recording her next album, "which is going amazingly well," he added.
While she may not be lipsynching singing this year, she will be appearing in "cheeky TV spots" with host Russel Brand to promote the event, according to US magazine.
In her years as a recording artist, Britney has been nominated 17 times for a VMA award, though she's never won. Perhaps that will change this year - she's got nods in three categories, including Video of the Year for Piece of Me.
It would be nice to see Britney back in her element, but I'm relieved that she's not doing the VMA thing again this year. I just can't take that kind of action twice.

I know, I couldn't take another cringing session - last year was so painful to watch (but good for gossip blogging).
