Soundbyte: "I'm English. Our dentistry is not world famous. But I made sure I got moldings of my old teeth beforehand because I miss them."
So this came out of nowhere: Christian Bale, star of the latest Batman installment The Dark Knight, was arrested and questioned at a London police station on Tuesday after his mother and sister alleged he assaulted them on Sunday evening.
He was questioned for four hours before being released, and is set to meet with police again in September about the issue. No charges were laid.
Christian's mouthpiece, Jennifer Allen, released a statement on the actor's behalf, saying,
"Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister. Mr. Bale, who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police."
The whole thing sounds kind of strange. I've read that the allegations aren't of assault in a physical sense, but instead, verbal - apparently folks across the pond can be charged with verbal assault, Class 4 and 5. There's a lot of talk out there about this whole thing, but the one thing I keep reading is that the incident was triggered after Christian's mother and sister insulted his wife, Sandra "Sibi" Blazic. From WWTDD:
Sources close to the actor said he 'flew off the handle' at London's Dorchester hotel after Jenny Bale said 'some outrageous things'.
However, a source close to the 34-year-old actor says Bale is confident he’s done nothing wrong, and blames his mother.
The source said: ‘Christian was stressed, but he didn’t lay a finger on anyone. Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother. He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him and his wife.’
‘Normally Christian would just call a friend and go out to a pub to cool off. But he was literally trapped into this confrontation with his mother and sister because there was an army of fans and paparazzi outside.’
Christian's mother, Jenny, and her daughter, Sharon, have both made statements acknowledging that there was an "incident", but don't elaborate.
"OK, there was an incident but the police are dealing with it," Sharon has said. "It is an extremely sensitive situation. There is nothing more I can say."
From Jenny: "Yes I was there and yes there was a family situation but the police are handling it and I cannot say anymore at the moment. We didn’t call the police to the scene. I can’t say anymore but we didn’t call the police."
I just think this whole thing smacks of weird.
The Dark Knight is obliterating box-office records; it brought in a whopping $158 million in its first three days and saw another $24 million come in on Monday. While I'm sure a big part of the film's draw is Heath Ledger's performance, which is rumoured to be Oscar-worthy, for the most part, I've heard it's a really good movie. And as the old saying goes, any publicity is good publicity, which, as strange as these familial assault allegations go, is probably ringing true for Christian right now.
