There's no doubt about it: Mariah Carey's worked hard for what she has. Along with the titles singer/songwriter, record producer and actress beside her name, she was the first singer to have her first five singles top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and, according to Billboard magazine, was the most successful artist of the '90s in the States.
Girlfriend was honoured as the best-selling female pop artist of the millennium at the 2000 World Music Awards and has had more Number One hits than The King of Rock n' Roll, Elvis Presley.
So, in a nutshell, Mariah? HUGE.
She's done a good job of keeping herself in the spotlight over the years, and these past few days have been no exception. Gossip sites were abuzz last week with the news that she told Britain's OK! magazine that she'd feel violated if she had children.
"It's hard to have kids in this world," she told the rag. "I don't think I could properly educate a child right now. Maybe in the future, but I actually haven't thought about it.
"For now, I enjoy my dog Jack's company. It's definitely because of childhood traumatic stuff. The whole not wanting me to have a baby as a baby. I never want to feel violated and I know that's kind of a weird thing to say, but that's how I am."
Aside from the whole "violated" thing, which kind of confused me and had me wondering if it had been been taken out of context, I can see where Mariah's coming from. It's not easy to reach the kind of status she's sitting at now, and in a day and age where young Hollywood stars are getting knocked up left and right, it's refreshing to hear a celebrity speak about what she wants, what she doesn't want and what she knows she can't manage at this point in her life, without sounding like an airhead.
This week's headlines boast that Mariah has gotten engaged to her (fairly) new boyfriend, actor and rapper Nick Cannon. Talk quickly shifted from how quickly the couple's relationship was moving (Cannon and Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks only called off their engagement last October) to speculation if Nick pulled an oh-no-he-di'int and recycled Mariah's engagement ring.
And, just this afternoon, Perez Hilton brought us breaking news, reporting that Mariah and Nick eloped and are already married - proving that, whatever the occasion, Supreme Diva Mariah Carey knows how to keep her name in the news.
