Without a doubt, celebrity endorsements can help make or break a product or message. Thankfully, endorsing green and environmental messages is super trendy these days (um, shouldn't that be a permanent trend? I certainly hope so).
According to Global Green USA, a national environmental organization, the celebrities who are the most successful at spreading the word are the ones who also incorporate greener living into their every day life. It's personal for them, and they want to spread the word.
These are just some of most visible green activists involved in getting the message out there:
- Leonardo DiCaprio (active member of Global Green’s board of directors)
- Edward Norton (also an active member of Global Green’s board of directors)
- Orlando Bloom
- Salma Hayak
- Jake Gyllenhaal
- Josh Lucas
- Cameron Diaz
- Toby Maguire
- Ed Begley Jr. (an excellent and committed role model imo)
- Amy Smart
- Darryl Hannah (who lives off-grid - now that's dedication)
- Norman Lear
- Paul Haggis
- Laura Dern
- Blythe Danner
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus (long time supporter of Heal the Bay in Southern California)
- Brad Pitt
- Richard Branson
- Woody Harrelson
- Owen Wilson
- Robert Redford
- Pierce Brosnan
- George Clooney
- Willie Nelson
- Ted Danson
- Natalie Portman
- Tom Hanks
- Alicia Silverstone
- Adam Levine
- Alicia Keys
Some damn fine celebs on that list (and some damn fine sexy ones too).
So how are they doing it? Most have made those simple little changes that many of us can also do (some without spending wads of money): things like composting, switching to hybrid vehicles, reusable and eco-friendly bags for shoppiing, adding solar panels to the house, eco-friendly cleaning products, and installing those loooooong lasting compact florescent lightbulbs.
Personally, I love this quote from Ed Begley Jr on celebrity endorsements:
“I think all citizens have a responsibility to get involved, but with celebrity, you have an added responsibility,... You need to seek out the best science and get your facts straight before you ever approach a mic or a camera.”
So true and well said. Oh and if you want to quote me (and about a zillion others who say the same thing) "EVERY DAY SHOULD BE EARTH DAY" but what am I famous for? Nada but I know that all the little things I do to save the earth and slow the decay, really does make a difference (now imagine if we ALL did it).
Happy Earth Day folks!
